Pentek's Virtex-7 FPGA based family of 3U VPX boards (for data acquisition, software radio and digital signal processing), offers flexible backplane fabric connections supporting maximum data rates of up to 8 GB/sec with Generation 3 PCI Express. The 3U VPX form factor is compact and extremely well suited for avionics, including UAVs, shipboard and airborne radar and signal intelligence applications.

Each of the 3U VPX modules features a Generation 2 PCI Express interface (PCI Express 2.0). The PCI Express interface includes a bridge that provides PCIe lane-width negotiation for x1, x4 or x8 data transfers over the VPX backplane. Models 53XXX feature a crossbar switch which allows for flexible assignment of the PCIe interface lanes to backplane connector pins. The crossbar supports gigabit serial protocols for moving data independently of any particular protocol (e.g. Xilinx Aurora or Serial Rapid I/O). It can also handle multiple data streams simultaneously and allows each module to act as a VPX switch managing serial fabric connections to and from other modules across the backplane. Models 52XXX do not have the crossbar switch fitted.
